The new edition of The Sheet Metal Welding Guide is the result of a two-year initiative by SMACNA’s Welding Task Force, which was formed to revise and update it, reflecting the latest welding technology and methods.
It includes updated coverage of welding processes; flux-cored wire guidelines; and the latest equipment. The safety chapter covers such items as health effects, hazard controls and safety procedures. Other chapters include guidelines for developing welding procedures, controlling weld quality, estimating, hiring and training welders and welder certification.
This publication and the wealth of information it contains are intended to assist contractors, estimators and shop supervisors in profitably managing the welding activity in a sheet metal shop.
Sheet metal contractors know that joining metal is a very labour-intensive part of their business. Many hours are spent welding together the various parts that make up the total sheet metal system. Managing the welding operation is a vital part of the total sheet metal business.
In the early 1980s, SMACNA seeing the need for more welding information with a sheet metal welding focus, published the first edition of this manual. The first edition collected information about the welding and sheet metal, but it was written from a nonexpert perspective. It was recognized that the manager had to be able to make informed business decisions and needed the tools to help in the process. Things such as weld productivity, quality, equipment selection, training, hiring, estimating, safety, welding processes and standards were examined from the managers prospective. The purpose of subsequent editions has been to continue providing the sheet metal manager with the tools to manage the welding operation, including the latest technological advances.
Welding is a very significant part of the sheet metal business. SMACNA through its Welding Task Force, working with members, chapters, and the welding industry in general, is committed to providing sheet metal contractors with guidelines for managing their welding operations.
