Bruce Sychuk Awarded the Petersen-Dunn Award

At the Sheet Metal and Air Conditioning Contractors' National Association (SMACNA) annual convention Bruce Sychuk, executive director of the British Columbia Sheet Metal Association (SMACNA-BC) received the Petersen-Dunn Award. "Bruce has spear-headed the most successful local labour-management partnership to date," said SMACNA president, Dick Cramer Sr.

Sychuk and former business manager Bob Colvin of SMWIA Local Union No. 280 travelled around BC to deliver the "partnership" message to SMACNA-BC and SMWIA Local Union No. 280 members, explaining how future success will depend on a change in the attitudes and practices of management and labour in the industry. Since the inception of the SMWIA Local Union No. 280 / SMACNA-BC Partnership in 2002, industry market share increased by the tune of 50 percent plus and communication between labour, management and the overall industry is at levels that are unprecedented. Sychuk advises that "Roadshow 2" is currently in the works; SMWIA Local Union No. 280 business manager Jim Paquette and Sychuk are planning to hit the road once again sometime late February or early March of 2008.

Prior to becoming SMACNA-BC chapter executive in 1998, Sychuk spent 26 years as a journeyman sheet metal worker and a member of SMWIA Local Union No. 280. SychukÕs involvements with National SMACNA include ÒPartnershipÓ presentations at past PartnerÕs in Progress Conferences and Council of Chapter Representatives Meetings, along with serving as vice-chairman and member of the Chapter ExecutiveÕs Institute Board."

Sychuk has been married to Roxanne for almost 33 years, is the father of two girls, Michelle and Veronica, and has two grandsons, Clayton & Reese. His hobbies are golf, golf and more golf.
